Deep in the Canadian suburbs, there lives a perfectly normal family in a perfectly normal town. Every so often, a very special icecream truck, the most magical one in this town, in fact, rolls on by the Ivory household. Nyon and Nyen, brothers of some kind, stay with the family of two.

Once again, the icecream van plays its luring tunes throughout the forest. Randal of course gets excited, being a fourteen year old boy.

“The icecream truck! May I have some money for some icecream please?” But just like most fourteen year olds, he has homework.

“No, Randal, you have homework.” Luther says. He’s Randal’s elegant older brother.

“But… for after I’m done?” He pleads.

“Do you promise to wait only until after you’re done to eat it?” Luther asks sternly.

“Yes, I promise!”

Luther contemplates for a few more moments before giving in. “Nyon, would you go buy Randal an icecream? I’ll give you three dollars for it. That should be plenty.”

Nyon nods, wanting to do something nice, despite being the socially awkward type. Though, if anyone saw him, they could tell he is not prepared for the confrontation.

“I’d send Nyen, but he’s busy.” Luther then reaches into his pocket and pulls out three dollars. “Here.” Nyon takes the money and walks out the door.

That was a week ago. And Nyon isn’t here anymore.

Out of pure stupidity, Randal decides to go out to that same icecream van from before, except now with his scarecrow friend. It truly is the most magical one in this town with flavors like rabbit and Nebraska. Neither of the boys could pay for what they have ordered.

“If you can’t pay for what you have bought,” the flower man says, “you will have to work here until your debt is paid off.” Then out of nowhere, two cow-looking employees jump out of the van and snatch the scarecrow kid, pulling him into the back of the truck.

Randal takes his already made icecream and runs off. “I’ll get more money from my brother!”

“I’ll give you five minutes.”

Randal miraculously falls asleep soon after walking through the front door of his house and before he could get any words out about his friend.

About two days later, Luther heads out the door. “I’m going to find Nyon. Randal, you’re staying home. Don’t cause any trouble while we are gone.” Randal nods in response.

The two men search around the town for anything suspicious. There’s nothing for hours and hours. Then, the faint, signature jingle of the icecream truck appears. They very well could be hallucinating at this point, but there is no harm in checking.

“Do you hear that?” Nyen asks the other. He nods. They proceed carefully, trying to make sure they are headed in the right direction. They assume to be doing so because the song becomes louder and louder.

The van becomes visible and then slows to a stop. “What lovely gentlemen! Come to buy some icecream?” The flower man asks, grinning ear to ear.

“Actually, we came here to ask if you have seen this person.” Nyen explains, holding up a picture of Nyon.

“Oh, yes! I actually have him back here, working to pay us off!” He turns around and flips a switch, revealing both Nyon and the scarecrow boy from before. “If you’d like, you may lend them the extra money they owed for me to release them. But… if not, they will just be our temporary taste testers.”

“Yes, I’d like to do that.” Luther said. The flower man hands over a paper, listing the prices. $3.52 remaining for the rabbit icecream, $9.99 for Nebraska, and $1 remaining for woodlouse. Luther rummages for his wallet to pull out $14.51, then passes it to the worker.

“Thank you, sir.” He then has the two cowmen unlatch the back and release Nyon and the scarecrow kid. Nyon runs over to Luther and Nyen, terrified at the truck workers.

“I am NEVER going around that boy, Randal, ever again! He left me- …to them!” He runs off without another word, heading towards the cornfield for which he came from.

The other three walk along the edge of the forest road towards home.
